The VIM gene encodes the vimentin protein, part of the intermediate filament family that makes up the cytoskeleton. Vimentin is important in maintaining cell shape and stabilizing cytoskeletal interactions, and are thought to play a role in embryogenesis, tumorigenesis, and wound healing (PMID: 20097873).
