Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Internal Control & Technical Accounting


Invitae is seeking a senior accounting professional to provide Technical Accounting and 404 Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) expertise in a dynamic and high growth organization. Reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer, this individual will oversee SOX compliance, testing and evaluation of internal controls. In addition, this individual will be principally responsible for technical accounting research and conclusions and will work with staff in finance, SEC financial reporting and compliance to conduct technical research and to analyze and document complex accounting issues. The ideal candidate will have direct experience with implementing an effective and efficient process over SOX in a public company environment.      


  • Responsible for Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX)/Internal Controls for Financial Reporting (ICFR) processes, including documentation, review and testing of internal controls.
  • Evaluate generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and regulatory compliance for SOX/ICFR and provide recommendations on accounting policies, internal control effectiveness and process improvements.
  • Work with process owners to advise/implement improvements to ensure compliance and continuously improve the Company’s ICFR.
  • Evaluate key risks in financial processes and propose changes in control design to address risks efficiently.
  • Communicate internal control impacts, issues, and strategic direction to fiduciary team.
  • Continuously enhance the external reporting and SOX processes to monitor progress, efficiently document, review and maintain supporting documentation.
  • Maintain narratives and policies as per changes to organizational structure and accounting operations. 
  • Lead annual financial reporting risk assessment for financial statements and disclosures.
  • Research and formally document technical accounting positions and other financial assertions.
  • Monitor development/changes in accounting and financial reporting, provide US GAAP interpretation and prepare technical memorandums that document issues in a clear, logical and comprehensive manner.
  • Lead Revenue Recognition (Topic 606)
  • Engage with external auditors to provide accounting, audit and SOX documentation support.


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher with an Accounting focus– required.
  • CPA license – required.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience working in public company, with SOX compliance responsibility.
  • Extensive knowledge of GAAP and SOX internal control standards.
  • Experience conducting SOX/ICFR walkthroughs and testing of controls. 
  • Strong written skills and experience in writing technical memorandums.
  • Strategic thinker with solid analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Experience in life science industry or diagnostic segment a plus.
