FAQs: Billing
Answers for patients and individuals who have questions about how to pay for genetic testing, including insurance options.
Cost
- What payment options are available?
Through the Invitae Billing Assurance Program, our dedicated billing specialists work with each patient to get a comprehensive view of their individual situation and help identify cost-effective and affordable payment options.
Within the US, billing insurance is often the most cost-effective choice. Typically, the out-of-pocket cost for a patient using insurance is less than $100.
Read on to learn more about billing options. When you’re ready to speak directly with a billing specialist, email us at billing@invitae.com or call 833-941-0828.
Insurance (US ONLY)
Most insurance plans cover genetic testing and Invitae is in network with national US health insurance plans.
Here's how it works:- When your test is complete, lnvitae submits a claim to your insurance and, once processed by your insurance, sends you a statement if you owe anything.
- If you owe more than $100, you’ll receive a call from our billing team to talk about cost-effective and affordable options based on your specific situation.
- You can also use our online estimator to see if you qualify for our patient assistance program by scrolling to the top of this page.
If your cost is higher than anticipated, call us when you receive your bill. We will work with you. Reach our dedicated billing specialists at billing@invitae.com or 833-941-0828. If you’re located outside the US, find local contact information at invitae.com/contact.
Medicare & Medicaid (US only)
Medicare and Medicaid frequently cover genetic testing. Please see the "Is Invitae’s genetic testing covered by Medicare and Medicaid in the US?" section below for more information about exclusions for the types of tests they may cover.
Patient assistance program (US only)
For US patients who qualify, the cost of tests may be either partially discounted or entirely waived, depending on income-based eligibility requirements. If you have received a paper statement from Invitae, you can make a payment here.
- I received an explanation of benefits (EOB) from my insurance company. Is this a bill?
You may receive an explanation of benefits (EOB) from your insurance company in the mail. This is not a bill. In most cases, Invitae will also receive this letter and will handle any appeals process with your insurance company. - What should I do if I receive a check from my insurance company?
If you receive a check from your insurance company, you have two options. You may:
- Endorse and mail the check alongside any additional paperwork from the insurance company to Invitae. Endorse the check by writing “Pay to the Order of Invitae” on the back and sign your name directly below.
- Cash the check yourself and remit payment to Invitae using a payment method of your choice, such as credit card, personal check or money order. You can make a credit card payment by phone by calling 833-941-0828.
