The ARSI gene encodes arylsulfatase I. While the specific function of ARSI is not well understood, arylsulfatase enzymes are known to hydrolyze sulfate ester bonds on a wide variety of substrates and function in diverse pathways including macromolecule metabolism and cell signaling.
