The SGCG gene encodes the gamma-sarcoglycan protein, a subunit of the tetrameric sarcoglycan complex. The sarcoglycan complex is a component of the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex, which functions as a structural link between the cytoskeleton of muscle cells and the extracellular matrix.
