The EYA1 gene encodes the eyes absent homolog 1 protein. This protein has intrinsic phosphatase activity and acts as a transcriptional coactivator as part of the Six-Eya-Dach regulatory network. The EYA protein may also be involved in promoting DNA repair by histone dephosphorylation. The encoded protein may play a role in the developing kidney, branchial arches, eye, and ear (PMID: 25458011).
