Pathogenic variants in DST are rare cause of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy and epidermolysis bullosa.

The DST gene encodes the dystonin protein that belongs to the plakin family of proteins. DST is involved in anchoring the intermediate filaments to the actin cytoskeleton in neural and muscle cells or keratin-containing intermediate filaments to hemidesmosomes in epithelial cells.
