Pathogenic variants in the KCNQ3 gene are associated with ~7% of clinical cases of benign familial neonatal seizures (BFNS) and are a rare cause of early infantile epileptic encephalopathy (EIEE).

Voltage-gated potassium channels allow potassium ions out of the cell after the application of a current, as in the case of neuron firing. The KCNQ3 gene encodes a voltage-gated potassium channel expressed in the central nervous system that helps to set the threshold for neuron firing (PMID: 9836639, 19949402).
