Pathogenic variants in the CHRNA2 gene are a rare cause of clinical cases of autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy.

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors are neuronal receptors that bind to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and trigger an influx of cations to stimulate the neuron to fire. The CHRNA2 gene encodes an alpha subunit of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (PMID: 25717303).
