Pathogenic variants in the ALDH7A1 gene are associated with 80-90% of clinical cases of pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy.

The ALDH7A1 encodes the enzyme α-aminoadipic semialdehyde dehydrogenase also known as antiquitin. It is a member of the aldehyde dehydrogenase gene family and provides instructions for producing enzymes that change aldehydes. ALDH7A1 is involved in breaking down lysine in the brain, which is necessary for energy production and producing other required molecules (PMID: 21338592, 20554659).
