AIFM1 is a rare cause of CMT4, and the percentage of cases attributed to pathogenic variants identified in AIFM1 is unknown.
The AIFM1 gene encodes the apoptosis inducing factor mitochondrion-associated-1 protein. This protein is a FAD-dependant oxidoreductase that mediates oxidative phosphorylation. It also plays a role in apoptosis through a caspase-independent cell-death pathway.
