Detect Hereditary Pancreatic Cancer

No-charge genetic testing and counseling for individuals diagnosed with pancreatic cancer

About pancreatic cancer

  • More than 56,000 adults in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer annually.

  • Pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer death in men and women in the US.

  • Professional society guidelines recommend germline genetic testing for hereditary pancreatic cancer to help assess precision medicine options and evaluate inclusion in clinical trials.

Program eligibility

This program is available to individuals in the US and Canada with one of the following diagnoses:

  • Pancreatic adenocarcinoma at any age

  • Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor at any age

Testing options

The Detect Hereditary Pancreatic Cancer program offers testing with the following three panels:

Invitae BRCA1 and BRCA2 STAT Panel*

This test analyzes the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which are assoicated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC). Accelerated turnaround time may be necessary because physicians and patients often want to make surgical and management decisions as quickly as possible.

Invitae Common Hereditary Cancers Panel

The Invitae Common Hereditary Cancers Panel analyzes 47 genes associated with cancers of the breast, ovary, uterus, prostate and gastrointestinal system, which includes the stomach, colon, rectum, small bowel, and pancreas.

Invitae Multi-Cancer Panel

The Invitae Multi-Cancer Panel is a comprehensive cancer panel that tests genes associated with hereditary cancer syndromes, including known pancreatic cancer genes.

*The Invitae BRCA1 and BRCA2 STAT Panel is optional. If selected, clinicians must also select either the Invitae Multi-Cancer Panel or the Invitae Common Hereditary Cancers Panel. If no additional panel is selected, Invitae will process the Invitae Multi-Cancer Panel by default. Results will be delivered separately in two different reports: the Invitae BRCA1 and BRCA 2 STAT Panel results will be reported within 5-12 days from sample accessioning. Results of the Invitae Multi-Cancer Panel or the Invitae Common Hereditary Cancers Panel will be reported separately within 21 days of delivery of the first report. If the Invitae BRCA1 and BRCA2 STAT Panel is not selected, results will be delivered within normal turnaround times.

Family follow-up testing

Invitae offers family variant testing for all blood relatives of patients who undergo testing at Invitae and are found to have a pathogenic or likely pathogenic variant. Our family variant testing reports on the variant(s) that was identified in the original family member, as well as any other pathogenic variant(s) found in the full gene.

If your patient tests positive through the Detect Hereditary Pancreatic Cancer program, all of his or her blood relatives are eligible for family variant testing. If the relatives choose to participate in the Detect Hereditary Pancreatic Cancer program, then the orders will be processed through the program.
